film & fourth year

Dru-1 Horses-1 Me-1a few favorites from a roll of film i’ve had in my camera for a few months now! dru actually just bought a scanner, so now we’ll be able to have all of our negatives uploaded and in a much better quality than the discs we’ve been getting from walmart. much better!

on another note… my fourth year project has been ordered!

(panic totally ensued typing that).

but seriously, that’s it, that’s all, its done, and there’s no making changes now. such a weird feeling! i just need to stop second guessing choices in the mean time. it was hard to narrow down what i’ve been up to and i would never be able to include everything that i would like (i’m a bit nonstalgic for shake face right now) but my teachers and few friends i’ve had to get opinions from have been supportive of what has been put together. so, i think i’m going to be really happy with it! only 29 days until the show, and the days to no more classes count… 16!

hope everyone’s having a good week!

double exposure: photoshop edition

LR Double Exposure-1i’ve been curious for a while what it would be like to start doing manual double exposures, so on a fairly spur of the moment trip to st. john’s this weekend to see my sister i took advantage of the 8 hours travel time both ways and tried my hand at them.

i’ll admit i’m pretty much photoshop illiterate, so i edited both images in lightroom first and them imported them into photoshop, played with opacities, reimported the final images to lightroom and fixed minor details and clarity. thoughts? it still doesn’t touch film (duh, considering film is the best) but i think it might be interesting all the same.

hope everyone had a good weekend!

sunday

what a different sunday. i’m used to sleeping in and going out for breakfast, photos all afternoon, some cooked/jigg’s dinner for supper, and then sitting back to enjoy [stress over] some walking dead.

but real life knocked, although it’s a bit of a stretch to call university “real life” to me, and i’m currently appreciating just hanging out at work for christmas hours doing some tidying and enjoying an americano. not to mention the excuse to get up and out of the house away from a to-do list the length of my arm… which i might add to the profs who occasionally migrate here, will be promptly revisited as soon as i’m finished work.

seriously though, i’m voting for eight days in a week. has anyone else seen the meme floating around with the caption “the first five days after the weekend are always the hardest!” and the girl sobbing into her hands? totally makes me laugh every time i see it.

woody point travels

its no surprise my car is just about photo road trip away from 18,000 kms. although after only getting it new on june 1, you’d think that number would be a little smaller! but call it taking advantage of this beautiful province, there’s no such thing as a wasted drive. just call it location scouting! (it helps justify all that gas money too).

the two above film photos are from a road trip out to woody point a few weeks ago. we definitely showed up in an off season – galliott studios was closed, whaat – but will be going back next summer for sure. it’s such a beautiful little place!

i can’t recommend enough for people to pick up some film though. borrow a film camera from someone, or dig one out of the back of a parent or grandparent’s closet. even if it’s been sitting there for 20 years, i bet you 20 dollars it still works. film is the best.

monday? monday.

today was definitely a monday.

on the bright side though, i picked up another disc of film photos i couldn’t be happier with. especially the last one! thoughts?

double exposure loving (as per usual)

i’m so never going to get tired of double exposures. the top one is an exposure of dru while we were out location scouting one saturday, and the bottom photo is an exposure of some leaves down the bay over my hippy purse (awesome bag, I broke one once and went out and bought its twin to replace it). picking up film is seriously like picking up presents. presents you have to pay for, but presents either way!

on another note, anyone have a suggestion for productivity or general alert-ness other than caffeine? today was an unfortunate sleep in, double expresso latte, energy drink, candy attempt at staying awake which have all so far not helped a whole lot. you know your ready to graduate university when!

hasselblad negatives

i juust finished developing my two rolls of hasselblad film, and all i have to say is whoaaa. i’ve really been dragging my feet about using this camera half due to the expensiveness of this project (almost $100 just for 50 sheets of large scale paper to print on alone), but i know when its all said and done having these negatives printed off on 11×14 paper will soo be worth it.

honestly, the size of the negatives and the quality of the film is crazy when you realize how old this camera is and the quality of cameras now! this camera by far surpasses anything digital i’ve ever used. film is killing it again!

film is the best

as much as i love my digital camera (which i honestly dearly do) there’s still something about film i frigging love. maybe its because you have to be so much more careful because “spraying and praying” isn’t really an option. you have 24 shots, and by the time you get the film back guaranteed your always surprised at a few frames whether you forgot you shot it or love how it turned out.

that being said, i just had three 35mm colored rolls developed yesterday after shooting off two rolls of hasselblad film for a school project. massive thanks to dru and reo for being such cooperative subjects! film is the best for sure. you can’t fake that kind of grain!

lightroom & updates

so to say that lightroom is a good editing program is the understatement of the year after having only done my processing iPhoto so far. iPhoto is definitely good at organizing cleanly, but as far as editing goes it does more harm than good and the more you try and do with a photo the more you can see quality disappear (in my opinion anyway). if you haven’t made the switch, I totally recommend you do it soon.

on a few other random notes…

i’m 21 in a week. WHAT is that?

my blog just hit over 8000 views in a year and a half! to not have my blog overly public yet but to still have so many regular visitors is awesome, and i really appreciate it. thanks for checking back!

my summer weddings start this weekend, and while i’m a little nervous i’m more excited than anything. they’re all going to be beauutiful, and i get to kick off my first one on a wharf in port aux basques! awesome.

i still can’t really come to any concrete decision on harlow, which isn’t really a surprise but its something i’m still thinking about a lot. i’d want my new camera first, and if i could get it and still go i think i might pack my bags now and start driving to the airport. BUT possibly giving up on being able to afford anything (other than… nope, nothing) for a good while, which yes includes camera equipment, is stressing me out.

i have a slightly bigger soft spot for photography this week because i don’t know if you remember the portrait I posted in my last post of my pop, but the cabin it was taken in just a few weeks ago is now destroyed. apparently mother nature with the combined efforts of the rock face it sits below it had other plans for the area. thankfully everyone is safe, but its still sad to see my grandparents cabin and a place i’ve spent a lot of time at now destroyed. the whole family is pretty upset too, so it means a lot to me that there is a pretty accurate depiction of my pop relaxing in it on one of the last weekends it was standing. ❤

and finally, after rocking three jobs for the majority of may/june/july, it looks like for the majority of august i will pretty much be free from any sort of work whatsoever. a couple random hours in the gallery here and there if need be, and of course there’s some wedding editing in there too. but… THREE weeks to relax? so excited!

film work

as much as I love my digital camera… film has totally stolen me, and I love the graininess of it. i’m in a mad rush this week to keep printing off prints for the art auction this weekend, and just wanted to post two of my favorites – I have such a beautiful friend! and bottle cove blows me away every time I see it. even though that’s probably in the triple digits by now.

back to the madness for me.
